my very own evil genius

So my hopes of having at least some sanity in my house were shattered when Hazel climbed out of her crib a couple weeks ago. She came around the corner and said, "hi!". I nearly peed my pants it scared me so bad. It was like I saw a ghost. The next morning she came around the corner to Tom and said, "boo!!". She loves the idea that she can rattle us. After choking back a little laughter, and putting her back in each time she got out, she only did it a couple times more and then finally got sick of it and didn't do it at all last week. I thought this meant we had avoided the storm. Phew. That could've been bad.
Little did I know she was just taking that time to plan a more efficient way to escape. See, before when she would get out, it took a bit of time and a lot of effort and it would scrape her cheek, this being why I think she realized it wasn't worth it anymore, because I'd just put her right back in and she'd have to do it all over again. Well she improved her tactics. Yesterday she got out. So I put her back in. And as I turned to leave, before I had even shut the door, she was right behind me. Again, my bladder was shaken. So I put her in again, and this time cracked the door and watched her. She had indeed improved. It took very little effort, no scraping of any part of her face, and she did it in about 1.4 seconds. The little rascal thought she could outsmart me. No way. I was going to take everyone's advice and do what I did before and just keep putting her back in each time she got out, with no interaction or attention. Surely she would give up at some point. They all do, said my advisors. Well, clearly we had underestimated our opponent. 2 1/2 HOURS later, at least 60 times in and out of the crib and a very sore back [I had to hoist her in one-handed several times while nursing Drew], I was ready to scream. Once again, I was reminded I do not have an ordinary child.
I think it's time for a toddler bed.

ahh! this would be the end for me, literally! izzy is now 29 months and has yet to figure that out-which allows me to teach early morning students while she's still confined to her crib, i don't know what i'll do when it happens!!! i feel a little guilty, but not enough to graduate to the toddler bed and give up my morning students. keep us updated on how the transition goes!

I was surprised at how easy it was to transition to a big bed! We did it when Dax turned 2 and it's no problem. Give it a try and good-luck!

What a cutie! She makes me laugh. 2 year olds are full of surprises. I do have to say, she has a beautiful ballerina pose in the picture. The crib climbing might give her some flexibility for dancing in a few years :)

I can't believe you kept putting her back in that many times! What a woman! She is darling.
